Caring For Your Crystal

Now that you have a beautiful set of crystal glasses, learn how to take proper care of them.

Handwash

To hand-wash, add dishwashing liquid to warm water, and always ensure that the wash and rinse water are at the same temperature. After cleaning, place glasses upside down on a towel for air drying. When washing crystal stemware, always hold the glass by the bowl, never by the stem, and do not twist the bowl and the stem in opposite directions when washing or drying.

Remove Discolouration or Streaking

Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar or isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to the rinse water. For extra shine, steam over boiling water and polish with a microfiber cloth. This will ensure that your crystal is always a show-stopping addition to any dinner party, event or even just your well-deserved evening relaxation.

For Tough Dirt

Soak the glassware in water with a squirt of dishwashing liquid and 1/2 teaspoon of fabric softener, and leave overnight.

Storing

Store glass in a cabinet, away from dust particles, over a cloth mat. Leave at least 2cm between your glasses to avoid chipping or hang them upside down in a specialised wine glass rack.

Why Crystal Glassware is The Obvious Choice

While most people primarily focus on the type of wine that is going to be served, a good host cannot ignore an important part of wine drinking: the type of wine glass you use. For decades now, wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts from all around the world have chosen crystal over glass and here’s why.

More Clarity and Brilliance

Bright and unyielding with a prismatic gleam, crystal is generally stronger than regular glass, with a microscopically coarser surface. It has refracting properties like a prism, decomposing the light coming through in the form of a rainbow. It is this particular characteristic that enhances the drink’s aroma when swirled, over having it swirled in a regular glass. If you’re into tasting wine, you know that the sense of sight plays a big part in the enjoyment experience. Wine colours are better appreciated in a crystal glass, whether they’re ruby-red, garnet, pale, straw, or golden- hued.

Slimmer Yet Durable

While glass stemware features thick rims and bowls, crystal flaunts a much more slender frame which also affects the taste and what’s more pleasurable than picking up a delicate glass and feeling the thin rim against your lips as you sip on your favourite wine? You’ll never get that feeling with a glass vessel.

The thickness of a wineglass rim impacts how the wine flows onto your tongue, which affects how you taste the wine. A thinly cut rim with no roll allows smooth flow of wine onto your tongue. On the other hand, a thicker rim with more roll inhibits flow onto your tongue. This accentuates the acidity and harshness of the wine.

Environmentally Friendly

There is a false belief that crystal’s extremely high lead content is what gives it its “sparkle,” but the truth is that crystal’s aesthetic brilliance is caused by the usage of crystal-line sand rather than soda-lime sand (which is used in the production of ordinary glass). In fact, the tiny quantity of lead that was once included in crystal has now been fully eliminated and titanium added as a result of technology’s ability to make things more environmentally friendly.
